I will not beat around the bush for this!

We will not be able to connect a router with BSNL teracom or Huawei modems, reason being BSNL modems connect as gateway where as routers expect it in bridge connection.

I spent hours thinking router was faulty. Then I googled and found some admin level change for the modem configuration page to change the modem to connect in bridge mode.

Well – forget all of them. I found a simpler answer with the help of a BSNL broadband engineer.

1) switch of BSNL modem, remove the cable from modem to laptop.
2) Switch on router ONLY and connect the cable to laptop.
3) Open http://192.168.1.1/ (generally user name and pwd is admin/admin), but you should be knowing if its other than linksys. Mine was WRT54G model.

4) Under “Network Setup”, change the local IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1
5) Save settings, this will reset the settings and you will get page cannot be displayed or blank page.
6) Basically we have changed the routers config page to 192.168.0.1
7) Now, Connect the modem cable to router router and power on.
8) All should be working fine now!

Reason was, both linksys and BSNL modem (Terracom and Huawei) both use the same IP address as config page and one tries to use it as gateway and the other tries it as bridge connection. This is the easiest and simplest way to fix.

Bit of information that you need to know about BSNL modems. GOOD TO KNOW, BUT DONT DO IT!

Admin link for your modem http://192.168.1.1/

user name : admin
password : admin

Under Configuration -> Internet connection you will see below screen.

BSNL config page

Click on edit of pppoe_0_35 (PVC mode) and it will take you through some pages where you will find the pre-registered username and pwd. Most of the times password is “password”. You can user “Asterisk Key” software to read those pre-filled passwords. They work well.

Here this pppoe_0_35 is gateway mode which need to be bridge connection to enable the usage of the router.
