It was 24th July 2009. Having a neutral weather for the day didnt give much comfort, however with the hope that that might get better, we headed to Jungfrau from Interlaken. It was a 3 trian break from Interlaken. First to Grindlewald, next to Kleine Schieldegg a scenic drive on cog wheel train, and last and breath taking mountain tunnel which is extraordinary effect of humankind with a longest future and life for that.
Grindlewald (dont confuse with gimmelwald) is another lovely place with numerous “things to do”, but the hope to finish Jungfrau first made us to go for it first. Gimmelwald to Kleine Schieldegg is another lovely place on earth with most beautiful trainstation with the matching colored trains. Last leg of train will take you all the way upto Jungfrau which has two stops where you can see the ice at its coldest. You could see glaciers. Height of it is at the right season people climb it!!!!.. I love adventure but this is something for the hard(est) core enthusiasts.
All the way it goes in the tunnel so you wont see a thing except at two quick 5 min stops where mount Eiger, Monch views are perfect. It was not really thrilling for the money (its the costliest even if you have Swiss pass). Anyhow, when touring that hardly matters. To our dismay, we had very rough and bad weather. The floor has many levels which hosts couple of restaurants (including a bollywood buffet restaurent). This has a ice palace, place where you could slide and play with snow discs and few other things to cherish. But the observation floor is the highlight of all. Gosh, when we were there it was like mad weather and it tried to tore me in every tissue. We cant withstand even 2 mins even if you are closed fully. However, it cleared a little and didnt disappoint as a total waste. It was a wonderful feeling to be there.
We had our dinner and it was really long journey back to Kleine Schieldegg and then another 45 mins to grindlewald which already ate 3/4 of the day for us and we were hell tired. Unfortunately, grindlewald was drizzling heavily and we had to skip “Grindlewald-First” an unique experience in which you will “fly” above snow almost 800 meteres on a suspended cable. We learned “first” is another place from where the beauiful scenary of bachlpsee lake can be seen is 1.5 hours trekking. We didnt have much time. So when you are planning, dedicate 2 days for Jungfrau region alone. Grindlewald has so many things to offer which you cant miss.
With this our day started to fade and we started to Zermatt which is 3 hours journey from Interlaken. 😉 little disappointed but who cares, am in Swiss – the beauty!!.. Every inch of swiss has its own beauty!!.. 😉
